Footy Tipping

Reporter: Mark Gibson

With a name like Steven Good, you'd want be, but when it comes to footy tipping, this Eagles fan is very, very good!

Out of 35,000 tipsters in the West Australian's on-line competition, Steve is the outright leader. After 8 rounds, he's picked an incredible 52 winners. Not bad for a rookie.

Here's Steve's magic formula. He starts by assuming the home teams will win...

"I then look at what teams I believe are on the way up and then I'll just go with my gut instinct."

Netball champion Bianca Franklin is the leading celebrity tipster on 46. She reckons some teams are a sure bet at home.

"I know that Brisbane play well at home at the GABBA and you know Sydney Swans also play well at home but I tend to pick the Hawthorn because of my brother."

The West Australian's chief footy writer Mark Duffield says Port Adelaide have been the hardest team to tip this year, but there are two teams you just can't go past.

"Don't tip against Geelong until further notice and don't tip against St Kilda until further notice but watch them a little more closely because they're playing on a lot of intensity at the moment and they may drop off a little bit."

Our top tipster disagrees...

"No they will go down and that will be the round that sorts out a lot of people".

The experts say this year teams with longer breaks between matches seem to be winning more often.

"It appears to be something that's really coming through this year where teams that have had a diminished break between games are really struggling to get up for those games."

So, what about this weekend? Our experts agree the Eagles should beat Collingwood, but Perth's best tipper is predicting a Fremantle upset.

It's only round 9, but Steve is eyeing off the big prize come September.

"There's $50,000 for the best tipster for the year and that can be doubled to $100,000 if you're getting The West home delivered."

A final word of advice…

"Have your formulas and stick with them because at some point during the year they will come through for you."
