McGregor - better known as the aloof and loveable Betty on the 80s sitcom Hey Dad, was always the one asking the questions.

Now at the age of 63 there's a question being asked of her, and it's no laughing matter. Is she too old to get her driver's licence?

"Well the first thing that I thought of when I was behind the wheel again was that it would be so easy to just go," McGregor said. "At first I thought it was just my over imagination or something, but other people have said 'oh yes, there is that feeling'."

An inner-city resident for many years, McGregor would always opt for public transport or a taxi. But now that she's living on the outskirts of Sydney, she needs a car to exercise her independence.

"It's one of those things that people just take for granted, you know they just hop in the car and go somewhere. And everyone says to me 'oh you won't know yourself', and 'you'll have that wonderful sense of exhilaration and freedom', so I'm waiting for that. So, maybe that'll happen," McGregor said.

McGregor's lack of driving highlights a serious dilemma all mature drivers face, according to mechanical engineer and driving expert John Cadogan.
