Scam Scratchie

It's not life changing money but 240 thousand dollars would solve a lot of problems for most people. Chances are there are hundreds of families winning the same prizes because it's all part of a scratch and win scam sweeping the country.

This scam which originates in Malaysia has already fleeced New Zealanders of millions and each week the figure grows here. Dr David Schaper is the acting chair of the Australian Competition Consumer Commission.

He says "the scam works two fold, first asking for a tax or administration fee to be paid to release the prize." The ACCC does work with organisations like Australia post in an attempt to seize scam mail but some does get through due to the sheer volume. Dr Schaper says it's important to report these scratchies if you get them so authorities can track them.
