Palm Beach Caravan Park site

15 September 2014

Defence Housing Australia (DHA) purchased the site of the Palm Beach Caravan Park for a future residential development in May 2014. The site has been leased back to the former owner (the park operator) and DHA will not take control of the land until 30 June 2016.

The caravan park had been on the open market for a number of years before purchase by DHA and residents were made aware of its potential sale. Since purchase, residents have been provided with a significantly extended period of notice - more than four times the required period - in which to find and establish their new home.

Although it is the park manager's responsibility to hand over a vacant site to DHA, we have, and will continue to, assist remaining residents in whatever way we can.

DHA has liaised with the Housing Authority and Returned Services League before and after purchase of the site to facilitate assistance to eligible residents.

Since purchase, we have written to residents confirming our commitment to supporting them with the transition.

We have hosted a series of information sessions at the Park which were open to all remaining residents. Representatives from the Housing Authority attended these sessions to provide information and assistance to residents.

The Housing Authority is separately and independently working with residents to ensure they are assisted into new accommodation.

Since the site was purchased, nearly two thirds of residents have found alternative accommodation, either privately or through assistance from the relevant agencies. DHA will continue to provide support to the remaining residents and agencies over the coming months.
